Description
One of Bangkok's most iconic and recognizable landmarks, Wat Arun Ratchawararam stands majestically on the west bank (Thonburi side) of the Chao Phraya River. Named after Aruna, the Hindu god of dawn, the temple has been a spiritual center since the Ayutthaya period.
The central prang (Khmer-style tower) rises over 70 meters and is covered in an intricate mosaic of colorful Chinese porcelain, seashells, and stucco flowers — originally used as ballast in trading ships. You can climb the extremely steep steps (not for the faint-hearted) for breathtaking panoramic views of the river, the Grand Palace, and Wat Pho across the water.
The temple complex also includes an ordination hall with murals depicting Prince Siddhartha's life, several smaller prangs decorated in the same porcelain style, and peaceful riverside gardens. The resident monks are occasionally seen going about their daily routines.
Most stunning at sunset when the temple glows golden, though the view of Wat Arun FROM the other side of the river (Tha Tien area) at sunset is equally famous. Entrance fee: 100 THB. Dress code: shoulders and knees must be covered (sarongs available to borrow). Access by ferry from Tha Tien pier (4 THB) or by road via Thonburi.
